How would you define ‘sin’ for a non-Christian?

  1. I would define sin for the Christian or non-Christian as selfishness. That is choosing what we want, our will, over God's will. It certainly would be sinful to disobey God but the idea of disobeying God is sin doesn't quite tell the whole story; there is more to it than that.

We may need to becareful that we do not fall into the trap of thinking obeying God is following the Law therefore I won't be punished(I will have eternal life). Romans 2:18 "He is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God."

Obeying God to gain favor is not a spiritual matter of the heart. Loving others and God as God has loved us is.

To not love, to be selfish, brings separation. All we have to do is think of that time where some one made it clear they were willing to "throw us under the bus" to know that feeling.
